12/2/2017 League WWFC 0 v 2 Kenilworth

Wellesbourne Wanderers U16 0 - 2 Kenilworth Wardens U16
Wellesbourne entertained Kenilworth Wardens at Loxley Road, the squad once more depleted by injury and unavailability. WW started brightly with Will B firing a shot narrowly wide on 2 minutes. On 9 minutes Richard played in Woody who made a great run in from the left, only to see his shot smothered by the Wardens keeper. Miles then fired in a fierce effort which was tipped over by the keeper. Kenilworth broke through the Wanderers defence on 24 minutes but the shot was pulled wide. Miles was in the action again on 29 minutes when his header from Will Bís corner was cleared off the line. A major scramble in the WW area was then eventually cleared. HT 0-0, WW perhaps just shading a tight contest.
Kenilworth started the second half the stronger, pushing WW deeper. An excellent saving tackle by Harry on 46 minutes kept Wanderers level but the back four, ably marshalled by Will K, were having to work ever harder. Tom had to use his speed to recover more than one dangerous situation, but it was little surprise when Kenilworth took the lead after 55 minutes, with a swift move down the left and good finish across Joe in the WW goal. Wellesbourne responded with a run from Richard but his shot was pulled wide. Oli and Woody then worked an opening but the keeper was off his line swiftly to smother the ball. The pattern of the second half was set with Wardens having most of the possession and going close to a second goal with a free kick just wide. WW were now reliant on breakaway raids. From one of these Richard laid the ball back to Joe M, whose well struck drive was bravely blocked. Then a similar move a few minutes later, this time Oli fizzed a shot just off target. Richard had a snapshot saved instinctively by the Wardens keeper and Will K, now pushed in to midfield, went on a surging run which forced another save. Kenilworth went very close to a second goal on 78 minutes before sealing the game a minute later with an excellent free kick which gave Joe no chance. WW were denied even a consolation in a remarkable passage of play in the final seconds as Richard (twice) and Will B were thwarted by a combination of goal-line clearance and a fine double save. FT 0-2. Kenilworth deserved the three points for a well organised team effort. MOM votes reflected the general play as they were dominated by the defence, joint runners up Harry, Tom and Will K, clear winner this week was Miles,
