20/11/2016 League Kenilworth 5 v 3 WWFC

Kenilworth Wardens U16 5 - 3 Wellesbourne Wanderers U16
A visit to Kenilworth for a league game, WW travelled without James, Sacha, Corey and Henry all absent for various reasons, plus Jason injured playing rugby – so down to their last 12. WW started brightly with Will B supplying Joe M to have a shot saved in the third minute. Kenilworth then forced Joe W into two good saves keeping WW level before on 12 minutes Richard supplied Joe M who curled a lovely left foot strike beyond the keeper. WW had chances to increase their lead with Will K seeing a header saved while Tom made a surging run down the right to supply Oli but well defended by Kenilworth. The home side then got clean through but struck the post, while at the other end Richard got between defender and keeper but saw his left foot shot roll just wide. Kenilworth got the upper hand towards the interval, and despite critical interceptions from Miles, Roger and Woody, it was no surprise when they equalised on 33 minutes with a fine left foot shot by their number nine. HT 1-1.
Wellesbourne were quick out of the blocks at the start of the second half, Will K firing one shot wide before Richard slipped the ball into his path, this one Will buried into the bottom corner, 1-2. Back came Kenilworth with another long range effort from number nine on 51 minutes for 2-2, followed two minutes later by a mix-up between Miles and Joe W allowing Kenilworths shortest player a free header, soft goal and WW were behind for the first time. Back they came though, Richard had a shot saved and then Joe M was taken down in the area, a clear penalty converted confidently by Will K for 3-3. On 63 minutes, Kenilworth took the lead again with another long range shot into the top corner. Two minutes later WW had their final chance but Tom’s shot was just wide, and then Wardens broke away with a good move well finished to seal the game. Final score 5-3 to Kenilworth. MOM votes – seven different nominees this week, and the winner was Joe Marston for an energetic performance in an unfamiliar position on the left, plus his fine finish for the first goal.
