2/10/2016 Cup WWFC 7 v 1 Lawford

The first cup match of the season on a lovely afternoon following the downpours of the Saturday. Lawford United were the visitors, from the league below (I think) looking for a cup upset.
WWFC started well stroking the ball around, a theme which was to continue throughout the match. Richard had the first chance after good work by Oli on the wing and he should of scored but mishit his shot. On 4 minutes though, the cup upset was on. A poor header from a corner put the ball in the danger area and the Lawford striker superbly finished into the top corner. 1-0 Lawford. WWFC didn’t panic and continued their patient game. James flying down the wing on 6 minutes, pinpoint cross to Oli who stretched his neck for a header that was just over. James was wide with a shot on 9 mins and then Woody had a storming run through the centre but his shot was blocked. The goal finally came on 16 mins with Will K passing to James who pulled it back to Oli who finished at the second time of asking. On 21 the same MO saw James pull back to Oli again, the bar this time and the follow up over. A minute later Oli got his second with a crisp shot. WWFC were certainly bossing the game, playing great football although they looked a bit rocky in defence from corners and crosses. Occasionally defenders had to make telling interceptions. On 30 mins a cracking shot into the top corner from New Will saw a debut goal 3-1. On 37 Lawford attacked and a long range shot was well tipped over by Joe. Straight from the corner, a WWFC break with James down the left, inside to Will K and another great finish to make it 4-1 at halftime.
A number of subs were made at halftime to give all boys minutes on the pitch. On 42, Tom made a great run down the right resulting in a corner, which Daniel headed and stunned him for a few seconds afterwards. 2 minutes late off went Tom again, playing a real wingback role. A lovely 1:2 with Daniel; saw him in the penalty area but his angle was narrow and the shot saved – that would have been a lovely goal. On 53 from a fully 25 yards, Joe M hit a beauty into the top corner to make the game safe. WWFC continued to swap players around and it was good to see this did not disrupt the crisp passing between them – they are really trying to play El Galactico football now - its taken 8 years!
On 53 Sasha started to dilly dally in defence when he should have cleared however he made up for it a minute later when a break by Lawford on 54 saw Joe out of position in goal but a last ditch effort on the line by Sasha saw the ball cleared. Then came the goal of the match, Joe M played a good ball out to Cory on the wing who skinned his man and whipped a cross over, met beautifully by Richard 8 yards out, headed into the corner – sublime. The game then went into a quiet period, with WWFC feeling they had done enough. Richard wanted more though and another long range finish on 73 saw the ball in the top corner again. Daniel had a swivel shot on 76 which was saved and that was the last action, with a comfortable win in the end 7-1. Credit to Lawford who kept going and the score was probably a little harsh.
MOM was Richard who was really lively in the last 20 mins but an excellent team performance overall. Another cup match next week over Dudley way…I am sure Great Aunties birthdays are happening on that day for a lot of the team
