Date Type Team S v S Team
29/1/2017 League S Newman 5 v 0 WWFC

Sporting Newman U16 5 - 0 Wellesbourne Wanderers U16
Wellesbourne travelled to Sporting Newman down to just eleven players, decimated by injuries and also the unexplained absence of their goalkeeper. WW lined up with Richard deputizing in goal for the absent Joe. Within a minute he was picking the ball out of the net as WW failed to clear a free kick which was finished into the roof of the net. Worse followed on 10 minutes as Richard came out of goal to clear a dangerous through ball for a throw which was quickly taken and volleyed over the keeper before he could get back to his line. Despite these early setbacks WW grew into the game with debutant Harry and Woody linking well down the left and Will B and Joe M competing strongly in midfield, Joe Wil working hard in an unfamiliar forward role. Tom moved to the centre of defence alongside Will K in a largely successful attempt to nullify the pacy Newman strikers, as the home side continued to play a rather direct game. Sporting did create further chances, striking the frame of the Wellesbourne goal twice, and Richard saving smartly from a header. WW struggled to create clear cut opportunities, and a free-kick in a promising position was wasted (Joe M, you should have taken that one ) Good work by Will B fed Jason down the right and his well struck drive was beaten away by the Sporting keeper. HT 2-0.
Miles took over in goal for the second half with Richard now pushed forward in support of Oli. Unfortunately Sporting pushed their number 8 further forward and were rewarded with two well taken goals within five minutes of the restart. A further spectacular volley by the same player then flew narrowly wide, that would have been special had it gone in. WW threatened with a couple of good moves involving Richard and Woody. A good ball from Harry sent in Richard down the left but the strikers left foot shot flew wide. At the other end Newman were though again, this time a great save by Miles. Midway through the half a rather route one goal made it five but WW although tiring with no subs competed gamely to the end. Miles made a couple more fine saves, both of these with his feet, and WW were denied a late consolation when Will Ks free-kick was headed wide by Oli. Full-time 5-0, well beaten by the league leaders but hardly disgraced. MOM a vote each for the two volunteer goalkeepers, joint runner-up Will B and Tom, and winner by one vote was Harry for an encouraging debut.
