Stratford Town Blues U16 1 - 2 Wellesbourne Wanderers U16
A lovely spring morning for the visit to old rivals Stratford Town Blues. Stratford had won with a late goal at Wellesbourne earlier in the season and another close game was anticipated. WW started well, with Sacha forcing a save from the Blues keeper in the fourth minute. Stratford should have scored three minutes later when a poor clearance presented a clear chance which was fired over. They immediately had a further opportunity which went wide. Tom made a surging run down the right but his shot was blocked for a corner. At the other end Blues broke through the middle, Joe was swiftly off his line and saved well. On 18 minutes a strong run down the left by Woody who forced a smart save. Oli then had the ball in the Stratford net, but correctly ruled offside. The Stratford keeper then produced two good saves to deny first James and then Richard before WW took a deserved lead on 29 minutes. James made a strong break down the left and his driven cross/shot found Richard who angled a fine finish in to the far corner. Blues had a goal ruled out (again correctly) for offside and Joe made another excellent save but Stratford levelled just before the interval with a decent move down the left and a low cross converted from close range. HT 1-1.
The first half had been entertaining but the second period grew scrappier, not helped by the congestion on a small pitch. There were also a lot of free-kicks which made the action rather stop-start. Stratford grew in confidence and looked the more likely to gain the advantage, but Joe made another fine save and it was WW who re-established their lead, rather against the run of play, mid-way through the half. A Wellesbourne attack was cleared as far as Will K on the right, and he curled an exquisite cross for James to steer a header beyond the Stratford keeper. Blues pressed hard for an equalizer but Wellesbourne, boosted late on by the welcome return of Roger after a long injury absence, held on for a hard-earned win which takes them off the foot of the table. FT 1-2. MOM joint runners up Joe M and Oli while clear winner this week was Joe Wo for those vital saves.
