6/11/2016 Cup Coundon C 5 v 2 WWFC

Coundon Court U16 5 - 2 Wellesbourne Wanderers U16
Another cup game this week, and a trip to Coundon Court who are unbeaten in Division A so a very tough game in prospect. A bright morning but with a chill wind blowing the length of the pitch, winter warmers required for the first time this season. WW started brightly with Will B the first in the notebook for a shot after 7 minutes that was saved. Coundon are an excellent footballing side though and soon started to assert themselves, with a good move creating a chance that was just off target on 12 minutes. They then got themselves on top, hitting the bar on 17 minutes, before a well worked short corner and a shot (that was possibly a cross) for 1-0 two minutes later. On 29 minutes. CC doubled their lead with an excellent strike from long range. WW almost struck back immediately a good move from Richard out to James who crossed first time, Cory forcing a smart save from the Coundon keeper. Joe was forced into good save on 34 minutes before Woody smacked a long range effort over the bar, and Joe tipped another strike over on the stroke of halftime. HT 2-0 and WW still in it.
WW had the advantage of the breeze in the second half, and within two minutes Richardís viciously inswinging corner was beaten behind by the CC keeper. Then followed a quieter period with Will K, and Joe M working hard to nullify the dangerous raids through midfield, and Roger, Sacha and Miles making vital interceptions at the back. Joe was forced into another good save before Coundon pretty much secured the result on 60 minutes after a bit of a mix-up in the WW defence. Oli had an effort saved and Woody fired a free kick over the bar as Wellesbourne searched for a way back, but a fine team move and good finish saw Coundon 4-0 ahead on 71 minutes. At this stage it looked as though WW might get a heavy beating they did not deserve but Oliís persistence won possession down the left, and his cross reached Woody who finished well with his left foot. CC scored a fifth goal with another good move on 75 minutes but WW kept going to the end. Oliís header forced a fine save before in the final minute Richard played in James, whose left foot strike was too strong for the Coundon keeper. Full time 5-2 to Coundon Court.
Despite the defeat this was a performance full of encouragement for the rest of the season. We went there expecting to face a big strong physical side but what WW encountered was a team full of quick thinking, quick passing, intelligent footballers. The Coundon number 4 looked about twelve years old but is one of the best players we will face all season. Two seasons ago WW would probably have lost a game like this about 13-1 but the boys can be proud that they gave a very good side a really hard game. MOM votes Ė an all-round team effort this week but for the record Oli, Woody and Miles all jointly third, Richard runner-up and clear winner this time was Will Kelley for a tireless performance in midfield.
