9/10/2016 cup Netherton 2 v 6 WWFC

Netherton Crown U16 2 - 6 Wellesbourne Wanderers U16
Another cup tie this week as WW made the long trip to play Netherton from the Stourbridge League in the Birmingham County FA Cup. The pre-match entertainment was second to none, 4x4 chased by police car, its progress arrested by the main gate, the fugitive fleeing across across the pitch on foot with officer in hot pursuit as the teams warmed up. Gary - you should have been there to write about this. The game kicked off to the accompaniment of wailing sirens, and the rotors of a police helicopter overhead - welcome to the Black Country !
WW were immediately on the attack, spurning three early chances which fell to James, Richard and Joe M while Will B also fired a free-kick over before Netherton took the lead with their first attack on 10 minutes a free kick pumped goalwards, not dealt with and finished from close range. Within a minute Richard should have equalised but shot beyond the far post. WW continued to press forward but a narrow and very bumpy pitch did not help their passing game and despite close attempts from James and Cory the breakthrough just would not come. On 30 minutes the police re-appeared (complete with the loot) to applause from the crowd. They stayed long enough to witness the WW equaliser just before half time, good work from Oli releasing James who slotted home beyond the keeper. HT 1-1 but Wellesbourne should have been four or five goals ahead.
Woody was the first to go close at the start of the second half before Netherton almost regained the lead when they broke through but shot wide. WW then took control, with Joe Wil turning home from close range on 44 minutes after a mistake in the home defence. Two minutes later Will Ks excellent free kick made it 3-1 before on 53 minutes James chased down a ball that looked to be going out, hooking it back across for Oli to volley home. Richard was having a bad day in front of goal, missing two further chances that he would normally have taken, although turning provider with a fine cross for Olis second goal on the hour. Netherton pulled a goal back on 63 minutes, a good move down the right finished with an excellent volley. The game became increasingly scrappy as it drew to a close, only enlivened by some comedy defending by the home side, allowing Cory to supply Oli for his hat-trick on 73 minutes. Full time score 2-6, not a great performance by any means but ultimately a comfortable win over rather limited opposition. MOM votes saw five nominations. with Joe Wil and Will K joint third, and joint winners this week Oli for a fine hat trick and Will B for a composed display in midfield. Through to the next round of the BCFA cup then, hopefully after such a long trip we will be rewarded with a home draw.
